Kagro in the Morning

Sep 26, 2024

Hey, they passed the CR! And you’ll never guess you’ve already guessed how: in exactly the same way that last year cost Kevin McCarthy his job. So, that’s news.

Oh, and in addition to asking Mike Johnson about that, reporters have also been asking him whether he’ll commit to “regular order” when it comes time to tally the Electoral College votes in January. (Not that it’ll necessarily be his decision, mind you.) But guess what? He’s hedging! Because he’s a Republican. So that’s news, too.

And that’s when Greg Dworkin came in, to remind me that there was other news, too. Namely, that the Mayor of New York City (New York City?!) had been indicted. Oh, yeah! (In the “I forgot!” sense, not the celebratory, “Hey, Kool-Aid!™” sense.) So of course, this sets off a tidal wave of calls for him to resign. Greg was at the ready with the answer to the obvious question, “What if he doesn’t?”

Well, of course there’s an answer. Because of course New York City has run into this before.

And then… there were polls. For whatever they’re worth.

National polling averages? Of course! National polling no more than a week old? Naturally! State polls by Marist? OK, fine. YouGov/Economist? Sure, if you want it. Monmouth in PA? Say no more! Texas? If you insist. Virginia? So you can see if the vest guy is really still a thing? My pleasure. Just Jews? Uh… ok. But watch it, buddy! Swing states? Well, isn’t it enough to just tell you that it’s close in all of them? (That’s why they’re swing states.)

Polling poetry, you say? That’s not even a… oh, wait! Hold on!

Today in Republican Racism: Clay Higgins. He’s no Professor Henry Higgins, that’s for sure. By the way, he’s kind of always been like this.

Today in voting: Uh… people are voting. I guess? Not really sure what to make of this one.

Today in furniture: Uh… many people are saying… something about furniture, allegedly? Trump also says people want to kill him. I think he’s probably right about that, which is a new concept.

So… we may or may not have “regular order” in counting the Electoral College vote. We can improve the chances of that happening by electing a Democratic majority in the House. But we’ll also need some plans for governing around any obstructionist Republicans who manage to hang around.
